jay sean + nicki minaj – 2012

Posted by VonSwayne in One of the Worst Songs of the Year!

Jay Sean……C’mon Son!!!! I can’t let this one slide no matter how much fun I had on the road with you and young Bikram a couple of years back. Worst of all when someone noticed how bad of a wanna-be-Prince ’1999′ remake this was they asked label mate Nicki Minaj to jump on and even she couldn’t save it. I’m sorry my dude I bought the last album when you released it in the UK, then again when you did the india version, and then AGAIN when you did the US version, BUT this song I CANNOT tolerate and is unfortunately one of the worst songs of the year so far.

If this is the first single off the new record I cringe at what I am about to experience. Is Jay’s career already going ‘doooowwwwnnn’????? I refuse to believe it…..Jay….C’mon Son!!!!

Last time I am in the A, my homeboy ‘Doobie’ aka Bobby Hurley (he hates that nickname) is taking me to the airport and I hear this track come on in his whip and I am like damn son what is this. He says something like its ‘Holy’ hip hop and its taking off. I said whatever it is its fire. Apparently T haddy attends his church and thats where he got the exclusive. Do yourself a favor and head on over to T Haddy’s website and check out some more of his mashups as many of them are equally as Dyaln as this one.

major lazer ft. busy signal & m.i.a. – sound of siren

This was supposed to be good……..what happened?

I gave this a half star for each of the entities involved. The other half star was for the track. Thats all I have in me at this point. Is Major Lazer doomed to become the trip hop electro dancehall version of Swizz Beats?
This song is one of five on the ‘Lazers Never Die‘ EP just released last week. I am going to go find a nice quiet corner to spend time with my tears.

Throwback Tuesday: CL Smooth & Pete Rock – Straighten it Out

Posted by Diddy in Throwback Tuesday

As I was searching through my playlist preparing for OGEE this past Saturday (which was absolutely BONKERS) I came across one of my favorite rapper/producer duo CL Smooth & Pete Rock.

After reminiscing (no pun intended) over how much the 90′s hip hop shaped my musical preferences thus far I only see it fitting to drop one of their best tracks “Straighten it Out” for Throwback Tuesdays.

Enjoy!

StonesThrow Podcast: Kutmah // Live in the UK

Posted by Diddy in Onesies

WOW, as I was sitting around this past Sunday afternoon loungin out I am always amazed and never disappointed by the folks at StonesThrow.

This time they are dropping gems from a guy who calls himself “Kutmah” and they caught one of his performance live from the UK and arranged to record it. Brilliant I say! This guy get’s it in…. and when I open a tea/coffee/deli house which will be here this guy must DEFINITELY be there

He goes from like a grungy hip-hop vibe to a perfect bubbly afternoon {pause} type of vibe all in one mix. You must listen to the whole thing, and hopefully you have tons to do when you’re listening because I guarantee it will be the most productive 51 mins of your day!

A musical collaboration put together by Mercer Street Records, the Enough! Project, and the Unison Agency has been put together to raise funds and awareness to the plight of people of Congo, specifically crimes against women and children in the mineral trade. Here’s the press release on the Mos Def track:

In partnership with the Enough Project, veteran taste-maker and former KCRW Music Director, Nic Harcourt, has enlisted the help of friends like: Bat For Lashes, Imaad Wasif, Konono No 1, Damien Rice, Amadou & Mariam, Norah Jones, Mos Def and more to donate songs to the Raise Hope For Congo compilation. The Raise Hope For Congo project aims to protect and empower Congolese women who are the subject of unspeakable abuse as a result of the high demand for the country’s conflict minerals used in cell phones and computers in the west. Listen to Mos Def’s contribution, “Priority (A Capella)” and go support the cause, take action now.

Mixtape Monday: J Dilla vs. Jay – Z by DJ Revo.lution 1

Posted by Diddy in Mixtape Monday

Well…it’s Monday and hopefully you don’t have a case of “the Mondays” like myself , however I believe that the guys at Revo.lution will get your day going.

I maybe late on this one, but the cats at Revolution killed this ultimate mash-up with two classic artists: J Dilla and Jay-Z. We all wonder what it would be like if Jay Z spit over certain beats, especially J Dilla and now there is no need to wonder!

Riddim Of The Week: Heathen Riddim

Posted by VonSwayne in Riddim of the week

RIP to Lincoln Barrington “Sugar” Minott (May 25, 1956 – July 10, 2010). You can read more about him here if you like. In short, Sugar Minott is one of those un-sung and lesser hailed heros of not only dancheall but just good music in general. He dedicated his life to not only contributing to every aspect of Jamaican music but was influential to other musicians’ careers in JA and abroad. You will find it quite difficult to find anyone saying much less than great things about his vocal talents as well as his human qualities. He will be missed.

It’s old school riddim time this week as O-Gee approaches. I want to send a special shout out to my Uncle Steve as he will be shortly leaving this city and its women (all shades) to further his education in the Big Apple. You make us proud homey. With that I give you the Heathen Riddim, first recorded by Robert Nester Marley for the Exodus album, which sold about 50 million copies or something just short of that (lol…not really it’s more like 20).

KiD CuDi – REVOFEV

Posted by Jefe in Onesies

When Von Swayne found this leak off Kid Cudi’s in-production album Man On The Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, he handed it to me as a true believer in the Cudder.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This track is a perfect example of why I love Cudi. I actually don’t like it too much. It’s grown on me since the first listen, but I’m still 50/50 at best. I also don’t like plenty of what the Kid puts out. But it’s original. And he’s mad original in general, and a helluva songwriter. I’ll joyously support someone who pushes the limits and works beyond traditional musical borders, even if there are plenty of misses on his record. I have similar feelings towards B.o.B. and Drake.
